After a client call, it's easy to forget exactly what was agreed. Who was responsible for what? What deadline did you settle on? Having a transcript of the meeting means you don't have to rely on memory or scribbled notes — you can go back and check.
Getting a meeting transcript used to mean paying for a transcription service or using a platform that supported it natively. Today, there's a simpler way to get an accurate transcript of any call — including Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, or anything else — from your iPhone.
Built-in transcription: what the platforms offer
Most major meeting platforms have added some form of transcription, but each comes with conditions:
- Zoom — transcription is available on paid plans, and only if you're the host or the host enables it. The transcript is saved to the cloud recording, not locally.
- Google Meet — transcripts require a Google Workspace account with the feature enabled by an admin. Not available on personal Gmail.
- Microsoft Teams — transcription requires a Microsoft 365 business license and must be started by the meeting organizer.
If you're a freelancer, a contractor, or someone joining someone else's call, you often won't have host permissions or the right plan. And even if you do, the transcript is tied to that platform — making it harder to use across different clients or tools.
A platform-independent way to get meeting transcripts
JottSmart takes a different approach. Instead of integrating with Zoom or Google Meet, it uses your iPhone's microphone to capture audio from your laptop speakers during the call. The result is a full recording and transcript that lives entirely on your device — regardless of who's hosting or what platform you're on.
Because it doesn't rely on platform permissions, it works in every situation:
- You're not the meeting host
- The other person is on a free plan
- Your client switches platforms between meetings
- You're on a phone call, not a video call
- You want the transcript saved locally, not in a cloud account
How to get a meeting transcript with JottSmart
- Open JottSmart before your call and optionally enter meeting context (client name, meeting type, agenda). This helps the AI generate more accurate and relevant notes afterward.
- Place your iPhone next to your laptop. It just needs to be close enough to clearly hear the audio coming from your speakers — usually a few inches away is enough.
- Tap Start Recording. Then join your call as normal on your laptop. JottSmart records in the background.
- When the meeting ends, tap Stop in JottSmart.
- Tap Transcribe & Analyze. JottSmart sends your audio to be processed and returns a full transcript, summary, action items, key decisions, and open questions — usually within a minute or two.
- Your transcript is saved locally on your device. You can read it, copy it, or use the Q&A feature to ask questions about what was said.
For best results, keep your laptop volume at a comfortable level and minimize background noise. If you recorded waiting time or small talk at the start, use JottSmart's audio trim feature to cut it before transcribing — you'll get cleaner output and use fewer AI minutes.
Transcripts in multiple languages
JottSmart supports two transcription language modes. Set it to English if your meeting is conducted entirely in English, or choose Auto to handle any other language or meetings where multiple languages are mixed. Auto detection works well for international clients and multilingual conversations.
Not ready to transcribe right away?
You don't have to generate your transcript immediately after the meeting. JottSmart saves the audio recording to your device, and you can come back and transcribe it any time — even days later. This is useful when you're back-to-back on calls and want to process everything at the end of the day.
More than just a transcript
The transcript is the foundation, but JottSmart goes further. Every processed meeting also includes:
- Summary — a short recap you can skim in 30 seconds
- Action items — automatically extracted tasks and deliverables
- Key decisions — what was agreed on during the call
- Open questions — anything that was raised but not resolved
- Q&A chat — ask anything about the meeting and get an instant answer based on the transcript
Everything is stored on your device, not in a cloud database. You're in control of your meeting records.
