Apple's Voice Memos app is excellent at capturing audio. It's reliable, fast to open, and already on every iPhone. What it doesn't always give you is the full workflow you need afterward. On supported iPhones, languages, and regions, Voice Memos can generate a basic transcript. But if you've recorded a meeting, lecture, or voice note, you may also want a structured summary, action items, decisions, open questions, and a way to ask follow-up questions about what was said.
JottSmart fills that gap. You can import any Voice Memos recording into JottSmart, transcribe it, and get a full text transcript alongside AI-generated notes — summary, action items, decisions, and more.
What Voice Memos provides — and when to go further
Voice Memos is a capable built-in recording app. Depending on your iPhone, language, and region, it can give you:
- High-quality audio capture
- A list of saved recordings with timestamps
- Playback with a scrubber
- Basic trimming
- A transcript you can view, copy, and search on supported devices
- The ability to share the audio file
A built-in transcript may be enough for a short personal memo. For a 45-minute meeting or a lecture with details you need to act on later, JottSmart adds structured notes, action items, decisions, open questions, and AI Q&A. It also provides an import path when Voice Memos transcription is not available for your device or language.
How to transcribe a Voice Memos recording with JottSmart
- Open Voice Memos on your iPhone and find the recording you want to transcribe.
- Tap the recording, then tap the three-dot menu (···) and choose Share. Select Save to Files and save it somewhere easy to find, like your Downloads folder or iCloud Drive.
- Open JottSmart and tap the Import option.
- Navigate to the file you saved in Files and select it. JottSmart validates the file and checks it's readable before processing.
- Optionally add context — a title, the recording type, or the original agenda — to help the AI produce more relevant notes.
- Tap to send to AI. JottSmart transcribes the audio and generates your notes. Review the transcript, summary, and action items when processing is complete.
Voice Memos often captures silence at the start or end of a recording, or sections you don't need in the transcript. Use JottSmart's audio trim tool before sending to AI to remove those sections. You'll get cleaner notes and use fewer AI minutes.
What you get after transcribing a voice memo
Once JottSmart processes the audio, you get more than just a transcript. Every transcribed recording includes:
- Full transcript — every word from the recording, readable and searchable
- Summary — the key points condensed into a short paragraph
- Outline — a structured breakdown of the recording by section or topic
- Action items — tasks and follow-ups extracted from the conversation
- Key decisions — explicit agreements or conclusions from the recording
- Open questions — unresolved points that still need an answer
- AI Q&A — ask any question about the recording and get an answer from the transcript and notes
All notes are saved on your device and can sync via iCloud to your other Apple devices.
Skip the export step: record directly in JottSmart
If you're going to transcribe a recording anyway, it's often simpler to record directly in JottSmart rather than starting in Voice Memos and then exporting. JottSmart records through your iPhone mic, and your transcription and AI notes can be generated immediately after you stop.
You can also choose to record in JottSmart and skip the AI step initially. Save an audio-only recording and send it to AI later when you have time to review it. This gives you the same flexibility as Voice Memos with the option to transcribe on demand.
Import from Voice Memos when you have an existing
recording you want to transcribe — something you captured before
you had JottSmart, or a recording made in Voice Memos during a
session where you forgot to switch apps.
Record directly in JottSmart for anything going
forward. It's one fewer step, and your recordings go straight into
JottSmart's history with full processing available.
Languages and auto-detection
JottSmart supports two spoken language modes for transcription:
- Auto-detect — the app identifies the spoken language automatically, with no setup required. Works well for most recordings, including voice memos in languages other than English.
- Specific language — choose from 57 listed languages when you know the language in advance. Useful for shorter recordings where auto-detection may need a few seconds to stabilize.
If you recorded in a language other than English and want your notes in English, set Notes Language to English before transcribing. JottSmart will generate the summary, action items, and other notes in English regardless of the spoken language.
Voice memos, with a transcript attached
Voice Memos is a good recorder. JottSmart is what you use when you want something more from those recordings. Import an existing memo, or start recording directly in JottSmart — either way, you walk away with a searchable transcript and structured notes that make every recording useful long after you've stopped listening.
